Oil painting page 4

Sub-surface scattering (SSS) results from the slight transparency of skin. It's a concept talked about a lot in 3D computer graphics where they are striving to find new techniques to render reality. Of course painters have been doing this for centuries without giving it a technical sounding name. painting

Quick paintning, done in one sitting. Probably took no more than 3/4 hour.
This was initially to test out a change in colour mixing technique for getting skin tones.Previously I have used cadmium orange in combination with about 3 other colours. But now, I have Raw Sienna and Rose madder to mix.

SSS again. This time I was hooked on the way beautiful young skin often is translucent enough to show sub-skin features. You don't see this in people who wear make-up or who have suntans. Pale has it's own appeal. oil painting
This image was largely unplanned. On a day when I felt like starting a new picture I found a couple of images in my school planner, and pretty much put then together. It's curious how doing this can create the urge to think up some plausable story behind the characters. Verdant painting
